Men and Therapy
I recognize the unique challenges that men face when deciding to see a therapist.
Men’s lives are governed by role expectations as much as women’s. The societal expectation of men in our culture is to work and provide for their family, with productivity seen as the measure of manhood. Men may spend a lifetime working to achieve career success and material wealth, while paying little attention to satisfying their own needs. Many men suffer in silence with depression, loss of vitality, anxiety, grief and a sense of loss, and are reluctant to seek help when they need it. When emotions are denied, wounds fester, and can manifest as physical symptoms.
